COURSE DESCRIPTION:
In this course we will study the historical development of financial institutions and markets. We will cover the development of banking systems and their regulation, analyze the emergence of central banking and securities markets, and discuss the history of government finance. Special attention will be paid to fluctuations and trends in stock, bond, and money markets and the recurring patterns in history's financial crises. The methodology of the course will be to apply the modern tools of monetary and macroeconomic theory to important historical issues. We will learn how theoretical tools and the analysis of historical data can shed new light on controversies of the past.
